Some 58 nautical miles from West Palm Beach, Florida, USA, lays an archipelago called the Bahamas. A place of natural beauty and pleasant weather all year round. A place where old school meets the contemporary. Noted for its hospitality and loving citizens, there you’ll find a group of men called the Island Gospel Quartet.
Brought up on such notable southern singers as: The Chuck Wagon Gang, The Louvin Brothers, Kitty Wells, Roy Acuff, Charlie Pride; and later on groups like The Inspirations, Rusty and The Goodman Family, The Cathedrals, Gold City among others, they were raised on southern music. So, naturally they leaned towards that which they knew and loved.
Andrew Gilbert: Group leader / lead singer has a wide experience in the music arena, and once opened for the Oakridge Boys as a solo act. He’s been singing gospel music now for over 40 yrs. An elder at his local assembly, he takes every invitation to minister the word in song
Ronald Woodside: Baritone and Group’s public relations point person. He along with Andrew Gilbert began a group known as the Gethsemane trio in 1983. That group sang until 1996, after which the third member left the group.
They continue their pursuit with the addition of Bertrand Duncanson in 2006.
He, like Andrew, has been singing for over 40 yrs. and plays an important part in his church’s music ministry.
Bertrand Duncanson: The elder statesman of the group, Elder Bert is an encyclopedia of spiritual knowledge. He began his southern gospel journey in 2006, but that is by no mean his genesis in the musical arena. Elder Bert has been singing for a mighty long time. He’s also starred in several stage plays. He is an Elder at his church, and his forte is tenor and leads.
Robert Higgs, PhD.: Bass. High octane and ready to perform is what you get from Dr. Higgs. He holds a degree in Psychology and Christian Counseling and is an educator. Singing gospel for the past 33 yrs. Dr. Higgs has sang with several groups, and is a lover of classical music. He plays several instruments and has a passion for young people.
This group of men are on a mission and has solicited the assistance of some of the notables in the industry to help them forge ahead. Those giving assistance to the Island Gospel Quartet have been – George Shelton Jr., of Shelton Sound Recording Studio, Dade City, Fla.; Betty Tilley of the Global Southern Gospel Radio Network and Arnie Shipp, of The Shipp Family Ministries, Clinton, SC, USA. These have been very instrumental in fostering awareness of this group.
There is a July tour scheduled for The Island Gospel Quartet into several South Eastern states of USA, before they head back into the studio during the final quarter of this year.
Folks if you would hear only one group this year, it should be The Island Gospel Quartet. With its southern sound, island accent and harmony, you’ll be amazed and in awe immediately. Facebook page here.
